Drop the baggage (7/23/2019)

SALUTATIONS: Hello everyone, I hope that you have had a productive week thus far. If this is your first time fellowshipping with us, or, perhaps you're revisiting, rest assured that you have found a safe place to share your personal matters with me confidentially or openly to our brothers and sisters in Christ, to help you determine the best approaches, or to simply be supportive as you make newly revealed God-driven moves; feel free to reply with your questions, comments, and/or concerns and I will respond at my earliest convenience. When you chose to make time, please take a moment to register your Ralph'sFood 4 Less, and/or Kroger Rewards cards to enroll your member number/phone number for the Ralph's/Food 4 Less Community Contribution Program to help Fostering Mind, Body, and Soul Incorporated (aka FMBS Inc., serving communities throughout Southern Cali since 2012) raise funds to give back to the community; for every purchase you make, a small % is given as a donation to our non-profit organization - your rewards points are NOT affected by this enrollment. Thank you in advance, I appreciate your support. Also, at your leisure, I encourage you to check out the AnnouncementsHealthy Living Tips, and other information detailed below, following the Reflections and Power in Prayer. Always SHARE GOD’s GOSPEL and feel free to share the Scripture of the Week with the hashtag SOW. Enjoy! **Disclaimer: Production and distribution days of the SOW are subject to change without warning**

PRAISE REPORTS: If you’re reading or hearing this message, acknowledge your blessing of life, functioning senses, and access to a means of fellowship with others. We ALL have a reason to SHOUT HALLELUJAH, some of us just need to recognize it. If you have a specific praise report, please share, because we “overcame [the adversary] by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of [our] testimony” (Revelation 12:11). **NOTE: All praise reports are shared with reference to your name unless anonymity is specified**

PRAYER REQUESTS: This week, let's pray for spiritual, religious, and world leaders; that each one may walk in his/her God-driven purpose so as not to tackle pressing issues with selfishness or biases, but to lead an exemplary life that is full of compassion, love, and fairness. Also, keep praying for one another, thanking Yahweh for the victory while refraining from confessing the problem caused by the enemy; ALWAYS pray for the desired result, NOT the unfavorable outcome (refer to the book The Tongue – A Creative Force, by Charles Capps; you can purchase your copy here https://goo.gl/qf4rxB). If you or someone you know needs prayer, let me know, and your request will be added to the following SOW. **NOTE: All prayer requests are shared with reference to your name and need unless anonymity is specified**

BE ENCOURAGED: NEVER lose sight of God in amidst of adversity… Ponder this: “A sacrifice to be real must cost, must hurt, and must empty ourselves. Give yourself fully to God. He will use you to accomplish great things on the condition that you believe much more in His love than in your weakness” (Mother Teresa). I'm no theological scholar, and even if I were a pastor or an expert on God's word, I would still advise you NEVER to take someone else's word as solid truth; "Study to show thyself approved" (2 Timothy 2:15), and CHALLENGE EVERYTHING by comparing it to the Word of God. If what you see, hear or read does NOT fall in line with the Word of God, then it is NOT true... The rest of this day isn't promised, let alone tomorrow, so why not strengthen your faith TODAY? Feed your body healthy nutrition, be cautious of what things you allow your eyes, ears, and spirit to be exposed to (e.g. media, books, TV, music, etc.) so that YOU can start anew and become a better you NOW, rather than later.

FEATURED SONGS OF PRAISE: "Changed" by Geoffrey Golden you can listen to it here (http://shorturl.at/gmrJY) "Worth" by Anthony Brown & group therAPy, you can listen to it here (http://shorturl.at/buDM4). I would also like to recommend Classical for Studying Radio on Pandora to better facilitate your meditation on the Word as you study, you can listen to that station here https://shorturl.at/elqz3.

OPENING PRAYER: Yahweh, please clear our minds and open our eyes, ears, and hearts so that we may be removed from self and moved by the Spirit, to see, hear, and receive your intended message from this fellowship. In the name of Yeshua, Amen!

PASSAGE(S) – HEBREWS 12:1: "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us."

**Unless otherwise indicated all Scripture quotations are taken from the King James Version (KJVof the Bible retrieved from https://www.biblegateway.com/passage**

REFLECTIONS: When you go to the airport and check-in your baggage, what do they have you do? They have you place your bag(s) on the scale to weigh it to see if you'll incur additional fees. What if our Christian walk was measured the same wayWhat if, we accrued fees for all the extra baggage we carried around in our relationship with the LordHow hefty would your fees be?

On our journey to spread the "Good News", we require NOTHING more than TRUST in the guidelines the Lord has already revealed through His Word, knowing "that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28NIV); "Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. 6 In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way]. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord [with reverent awe and obedience] and turn [entirely] away from evil. 8 It will be health to your body [your marrow, your nerves, your sinews, your muscles—all your inner parts] and refreshment (physical well-being) to your bones" (Proverbs 3:5-8AMP). The Holy Spirit provides will power and the words to say to those who are receptive, as well as the thick skin needed in the face of rejection. We mustn't "worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own" (Matthew 6:34NIV); the things we don't have, hold no value in our walk with the Lord.

As we GIVE UP SELF and FOLLOW HIM - SACRIFICE 100% of self - we are letting go of an added impediment of heavy baggage. When you were little, wasn't it hard to keep up with an adult? Their steps were twice as large as ours, so, to an adult's single step, a child pitter-patters about 3-4 mini-steps. What happens when you try to allow a toddler to help you carry something? You usually give him/her something light, however, light to us is just as easily burdensome to them, making it difficult for them to keep in toe; as we walk with the Lord, it'll be hard to keep up if we're encumbered by baggage, be it something from our past, a toxic relationship, a bad habit, fear, etc. God's Word tells us, "... let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us (Hebrews 12:1NIV); Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past (Isaiah 43:18NIV); Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice (Ephesians 4:31NIV); 'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'" (Jeremiah 29:11NIV). We're asked to follow Christ, trusting His plan enough to leave behind the dead weight. However, there's more to it than merely letting go of something or someone; we are on a journey that cannot progress until we drop the baggage. Don't allow your baggage weight you down.

POWER IN PRAYER: Yahweh, we thank you for redemption, and for the freedom to choose life over death by way of our faith. We thank you for your provisions of health and healing, and for allowing us to breathe yet another week. Help us believe and remove the things or people from our lives hindering us from recognizing our potential and purpose so that the spiritual things that require spiritual discerning will be clear to us. Lord, we praise you for the peace and calm amidst chaos, sorrow, and mourning. We thank you for removing all strongholds that prevent us from establishing and strengthening a relationship with you. We ask you to cover our spiritual, religious, and world leaders so that each of them may individually and collectively walk in his/her God-driven purpose; may they be unbiased, fair, and compassionate in their rulings, exemplary in their walk and in their words, and may they lead a life of love and selflessness to effectively address the pressing issues of our nations. We thank you for closing doors that are necessary for our growth while opening new windows of opportunities for transformation of a character that reflects you; keep us steadfast as we embark on the paths you've etched into our hearts, Father, so that we will remain obedient to you and continue to make choices in wisdom, not folly. Create in us new hearts that sincerely trust in and act upon your will. Help us to turn away from sin and to serve others in a manner that displays an appropriate example of Christ-like behavior, demonstrates love, encouragement, edification, and strength so that others may experience your grace through us. We give the Holy Spirit permission to dwell within and use us as vessels to share your light with the world. Give us the strength and desire to forgive those who have wronged us, and to forgive ourselves; cause us to let go of the past that haunts us and release us from any binds and attachments that negatively impact our growth. Keep us humble, focused, disciplined, and driven as we work to become everything you have called us to be. Bless each of us individually providing all the tools necessary to balance our spiritual, personal, and professional lives. Bless our loved ones and even our enemies. Provide revelations and awareness as you deliver us from our hindrances and achieve in us the ability to pray game-changing prayers – prayers that change people, change outcomes, and help your will to manifest. This is our trusted prayer, and as your angels and Holy Spirit do your bidding on Earth and in Heaven, protect us and them with your recourse. All these things we ask in the matchless name of Yeshua, Amen!

HEALTHY LIVING TIPS: Change begins within... Many people struggle to develop and maintain healthy sleep habits. The demands of parenthood, work, chores, errands, social lives, etc. weigh us down. Some of us rarely get a good night's sleep, meaning, we never feel rested or refreshed when we wake-up in the morning. That can potentially develop into fatigue, and then our bodies attempt to play "catch-up" by oversleeping, and then we wake up groggy. It's a lose-lose if you lack sleep or sleep too much. But healthy sleep habits are essential for productivity, anti-aging, clear thinking, energy, and positive moods. Here are 11 tips from the National Sleep Foundation (http://www.sleepfpundation.org) for building healthy sleep patterns:
  1. Stick to a sleep schedule of the same bedtime and wake-up time, even on the weekends, to help regulate your body's natural clock.
  2. Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual. For example, I like to listen to soothing music such as classical or binaural beats for healing the chakras.
  3. If you find that you can't fall asleep at bedtime, eliminating power naps, or even short catnaps may help.
  4. Exercise daily.
  5. Monitor your room: eliminate noise distractions, keep the room dark, and make sure it's cool (try cracking your window ever so slightly).
  6. Make sure you have a comfortable mattress and pillows; change your mattress and pillows according to their recommended life expectancy.
  7. Stick to bright light in the morning and dim in the evening to help manage your circadian rhythms.
  8. Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and heavy meals in the evening because they can disrupt sleep. However, a light snack (almonds, banana, yogurt, etc.) is okay before bed or in the middle of the night if you're feeling a bit hungry.
  9. Before bed, wind down doing calming activities such as reading and/or meditation to help your body get into sleep mode.
  10. Avoid TV, computers, electronics, and work when you're in bed, it triggers your mind to stay in "woke" mode.
  11. Lastly, if you're still struggling and have tried all holistic approaches, including herbal remedies and meditation, then don't be afraid to talk to your physician.

Christian Standards (7/16/2019)

SALUTATIONS: Hello everyone, I hope that you have had a productive week thus far. As I type this week's lesson a rom-com from my childhood comes to mind, Look Who's Talking Too, specifically when Rosanne's character asks, "Can we talk?" So, can we? I want to hear from you. What are some things that you'd like us to delve into in our studiesWhat spiritual insights are you looking to explore? If you're looking for something more personal, perhaps you need someone to confide in, or, someone to pour into you with upliftment. Well, you've found your safe place to rest assured that you can talk to me about matters confidentially or openly, to help you determine the best approaches, or to simply be supportive as you make newly revealed God-driven moves. I ran into some technical difficulties this week, but we shall persevere.

PRAISE REPORTS: I've made a conscious decision, after praying over the matter, to live a life of gratitude, abundance, wealth, and financial freedom. I've determined that abundance and wealth are mindsets that have little to do with material gain, and everything to do with your perception of life. Although this will be a journey for me, my praise precedes the victory, because I am confident it's already won. As you’re reading or hearing this message, be aware of your blessing of life, functioning senses, and access to a device to view and SHARE this message. ALL of us have reasons to SHOUT HALLELUJAH! If you have a specific praise report, please share, because we “overcame him [the adversary] by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of [our] testimony” (Revelation 12:11). **NOTE: All praise reports are shared with reference to your name unless anonymity is specified**

PRAYER REQUESTS: This week, let's pray for individuals burdened by mental illness, be it depression, psychosis, dementia, retardation, suicidal ideations, or other troubling neurological issues. Let's also pray for the families and friends of those in suffering, that they may be attentive, aware, patient, and supportive.

BE ENCOURAGED: NEVER lose sight of God in amidst of adversity… Ponder this: “Happiness doesn't come about only due to external circumstances; it mainly derives from inner attitudes” (Dalai Lama); “Believe in your infinite potential, your ONLY limitations are those YOU set upon yourself” (Roy T. Bennett).

FEATURED SONGS OF PRAISE: "You Are the Living Word" by Fred Hammond & Radical for Christ you can listen to it here (http://shorturl.at/rCV89) "Glory to the Lamb" by Geoffrey Golden, you can listen to it here (http://shorturl.at/bilSU).

PASSAGE(S) – 2 CORINTHIANS 5:20 (NLT): "So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making His appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, 'Come back to God!'"

**Unless otherwise indicated all Scripture quotations are taken from the King James Version (KJVof the Bible retrieved from https://www.biblegateway.com/passage**

REFLECTIONS: What are Christian standardsStandards, by definition, is a level of quality. Whereby making Christian standards a level of quality, Christ-like characteristics. 2 Corinthians 5:20 labels us as "ambassadors" - presbeuō in its Hebrew-Greek translation, which means a figurative preacher - meaning that we as believers are appointed as the official representatives of God's message of love and service. In Isaiah 62:10, we are tasked with the responsibility to "prepare the way of the people"; "way" or dârak, meaning the path traveled, and "people" or am, referencing a tribe or flock. In other words, our Christian standards would deem us liable for the preparation of God's people by teaching or delivering His Gospel of love, NOT prejudicially to people whom we think are more like us, rather, WITHOUT showing preference to anyone; after all, most individuals are not different or weird, it's our perception of those people that are. Think about it, we all have a set of fingerprints that are different, right? The "unique" factor of fingerprints would be two individuals who have the same patterns, whereas, by each of us having different patterns, we're the same in that respect. We have eyes, ears, a nose, a mouth, limbs, a body, etc. The "unique" or "different" person is the person born with a deformity. However, the fact that they were born from a womb and the Lord breathed life into them, makes us all the same. Therefore, it is a preconceived notion that causes us to shun others, focusing on the cliques we've established by reaching out only to people who seem to have similar interests. But if we only focus on relationships with other believers, we leave the non-believers, the confused, the lost, and the hopeless out on a limb alone. We are assigned with a greater mission, to lead an example that will help influence a tribe of people, not solely the individuals we've accepted due to an impaired percipience.

Our Christian standards should lead us to develop a wide sense of affection and compassion towards others, steering clear from self-absorbed behaviors influenced by human nature, such as boasting, epithumia (a longing esp. for that which is forbidden), arrogance, lack of empathy, or puffed up opinions that devalue others. 1 John 2:15-17 (NLT) reminds us, "15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever." The KJV says, "... the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever" (verse 17); referencing the Hebrew-Greek translations of "will" (thelēma - special purpose), "abideth" (menō - stay, dwell), and "forever" (aiōn and eis - messianic period in the future, the point reached), we see that by conforming to God's designated purpose for our lives, we are able to remain with Him upon that point in time that things of this world have no further value, and the Lord comes to reclaim His people.

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will" (Romans 12:1-2NIV). These scripture verses warn us not to "conform" (suschēmatizō) - fashion ourselves in the likeness of societal norms, instead, to "be transformed" (metamorphoō) transfigured - to CHANGE into something or someone, more beautiful and elevated, which is a process that begins in the mind. "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks" (Luke 6:45); the things we value in the heart rely heavily on the emotional attachments we place on those things; it is through our perceptions, and thought processes that cause us to establish our sentiments. Since our words have the power to speak life or death, success or failure, happiness or hopelessness, it is imperative that we develop a healthy mindset.

The serenity (peace of mind) from the Lord exceeds all logic and intellect; it protects both our minds and hearts as we maintain a closeness - relationship - with the Lord, by meditating on things that are "true" (alēthēs - not concealing), "honest" (semnos - honorable), "just" (dikaios - fair, impartial), "pure" (hagnos - innocent), "lovely" (prosphilēs - acceptable), "of good report" (euphēmos - reputable), of "virtue" (aretē - excellence), and of "praise" (epainos - commendable thing); when we reflect on the Lord's glory and cogitate on that which helps to favorably construct our minds, we open the door for the Holy Spirit to "change" - the Hebrew-Greek translation here, again is metamorphoō - or convert us to become more like the Lord (refer to Philippians 4:7-8here http://shorturl.at/gmnsL and 2 Corinthians 3:18 here http://shorturl.at/ekACQ).

In Summary, we MUST guard our minds 24/7, contemplating on things that are encouraging, uplifting, and beneficial to our personal, spiritual, and professional livelihood, so that our mindset matures; as our attitudes are sculpted to exude positivity, we will be transfigured as we speak constructive words into our own lives and those of others, and as we lead a life of love and service to ALL of God's people.

POWER IN PRAYER: Yahweh, we thank you for redemption, and for the freedom to choose life over death by way of our faith. We thank you for your provisions of health and healing, and for allowing us to breathe yet another week. Forgive us for our unbelief and remove the things or people from our lives hindering us from recognizing our potential and purpose, so that the spiritual things that require spiritual discerning will be clear to us. Lord, we praise you for the peace and calm amidst chaos, sorrow, and mourning. We thank you for removing all strongholds that prevent us from establishing and strengthening a relationship with you. We ask you to cover and deliver individuals burdened by all forms of mental illness and neurological issues; help them to accept the healing that was already provided by the blood of Jesus. Father, we also pray for the families and friends of those suffering from said illnesses; help them to remain patient as you strengthen their attentiveness, awareness, patience, and supportiveness. Help us to exercise due diligence when studying your word and applying your decrees into our daily lives.

Healthy living has to do with overall wellbeing, that includes the mind, body, and soul. You should be reading materials that are encouraging, spiritually uplifting, and/or educational, at the minimum 30 minutes of positive reading daily or about 10 pages. You should be consuming a variety of foods and liquids that contain vitamins, protein, antioxidants, carbs - yes, I said carbs, but we'll get to that in a sec, as well as other nutrients. Now, back to the carbs. Obviously, with every group of food, there are always healthier alternatives, so, the BEST thing to do is consider your options. For example, if you have baked vs. fried, choose baked. Be mindful of the sodium and caloric intake, try not to exceed the recommended daily calorie intake. To be quite honest, calories are calories no matter the type of food. However, a side salad that's about 200 calories would be a better choice than a Snickers bar of about 170 calories, because the salad has nutrients that candy lacks.

I am NOT a believer in diets. To me, the term "diet" refers to a lifestyle - what foods and drinks you consume as well as their portion size and the habits associated with said foods. For instance, overeating, not eating enough, binge eating, stress eating, late-night eating, etc. You need to have a balance of ALL food benefits, as well as good habits. So, consuming an appropriate amount of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a snack in-between, are healthy habits. Additionally, portion-control, and choosing healthy fats, carbs, and proteins. Personally, I am firmly against diets that cut out carbs, or that rely heavily on one or two types of food. Why? Because people who do trendy diets usually get bored, lack consistency, and at some point, they quit altogether. Whatever weight-loss goals that were met, reverse the moment their body craves to make-up for being deprived of those foods that were cut out for a period.

Lastly, your soul needs to be fed as well. I myself am a follower of Christ, however, I do NOT force my beliefs on anyone. I encourage you to be connected spiritually to God, or whatever higher being you choose to be connected to. Spirituality is what develops our compassion and love for others, helps us maintain solace amidst chaos, and keeps us ever-evolving into maturity as exemplary human beings.

What leads your quest? Part 2 (7/7/2019)

SALUTATIONS: Hello everyone, I hope that everyone had a relaxing 4th of July. I did, for the first in many years. I don't know when the transition took place, of me going from anticipating Independence Day to dreading it, but I really dislike that holiday. I mean seriously, what in the heck do people truly get out of spending their hard earned, or not so hard earned cash flow to buy miniature dynamite whose blasts keep the neighborhood awake with all the "booms," that have car alarms sounding at all times of day, the months leading up to the 4th and months thereafter? I spent that weekend out of town bonding with my son, and aside from the little earthquake that my mini-me slept through, I was undisturbed by any 4th of July shenanigans, thank God. Anyway, I'd like to admit that the delay in the current SOW is legit this time. I actually skipped sending the SOW last week in order to do more in-depth study, to collect additional context to clear up concerns that some of our brothers and sisters may have had with regard to the last message I sent out; it was brought to my attention that the lesson may have been a bit confusing to new believers and may even be a deterrent. Plus, as I was editing the SOW on Sunday, I ran into some technical difficulties and couldn’t finish editing until well after midnight… Let me take a moment to admonish you: first, Satan is the author of confusion, second, spiritual things cannot be understood by those who reject discernment from the Spirit (refer to 1 Corinthians 2:14 here http://shorturl.at/msxAL). That being said, it's imperative for us to enter into our studies with an open mind and heart; start your studies with prayer for clarity, understanding, and discernment, BEFORE any attempts to delve into a spiritual message; entering your spiritual quest with prayer, helps to facilitate the removal of hindrances that may have deafened you to the Spirit's instruction. On another note, when you chose to make time, please take a moment to register your Ralph'sFood 4 Less, and/or Kroger Rewards cards to enroll your member number/phone number for the Ralph's/Food 4 Less Community Contribution Program to help Fostering Mind, Body, and Soul Incorporated (aka FMBS Inc., serving communities throughout Southern Cali since 2012) raise funds to give back to the community; for every purchase you make, a small % is given as a donation to our non-profit organization - your rewards points are NOT affected by this enrollment.

PRAISE REPORTS: Josias, my son, has spent the past few days wearing only regular underwear during the day and at night, with no accidents; here is where I'd insert the emoji with the praising hands, but I don't know how to do that, so I'll just say, "Hallelujah" instead. In fact, you should be shouting "Hallelujah" too, because you’re reading this message, which means that you’ve been blessed with another moment of life, functioning senses, and access to a device to view and SHARE this message. Thank you, Yeshua! If you have a specific praise report, please share, because we “overcame him [the adversary] by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of [our] testimony” (Revelation 12:11). **NOTE: All praise reports are shared with reference to your name unless anonymity is specified**

PRAYER REQUESTS: This week, let's pray for strongholds to be removed and for self to be set aside, so that our true purpose is revealed and/or the direction, understanding, and skill necessary to step into our purpose is defined and developed right away, so that we aren't wasting precious moments being stagnant.

BE ENCOURAGED: NEVER lose sight of God in amidst of adversity… Ponder this: “To walk the spiritual path is to continually step out into the unknown” (Wallace Huey).

FEATURED SONGS OF PRAISE: "You Got Up" by Travis Greene you can listen to it here (https://shorturl.at/qBPS0) "Know Him" by J. Moss, you can listen to it here (https://shorturl.at/pqyIS).

PASSAGE(S) – MATTHEW 6:33: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

**Unless otherwise indicated all Scripture quotations are taken from the King James Version (KJVof the Bible retrieved from https://www.biblegateway.com/passage**
REFLECTIONS: Last time I started by posing the question, "What or who is it that leads your quests?" We discussed our misguided motives behind seeking God. We reviewed some of our audacious expectations of the Lord. We compared seeking God to gift-giving - whether you are a gifter who gives with an expectation of receiving NOTHING in return, as intended, or, you're a gifter who gives to someone you care about, yet, knowing that the individual you're blessing will return the favor, seeking God has its parallels. When we go to the Lord earnestly seeking to be touched by Him, we know that there are benefits in building that relationship, but the benefits are an afterthought. Our seeking a relationship with Yahweh shouldn't rely on what He can do for us, meaning, the reason we go to Him should NOT be self-serving - that is where some of our brothers and sisters in Christ struggled with our previous message. Some of you may have the same or similar concerns: Why shouldn't I seek God out of fear if fear is the beginning of knowledge? Why shouldn't I seek the Lord for peace, salvation, or Heaven, isn't that the whole point? Let's dive in, shall we?

Let me be clear, I am NOT saying that you cannot or should not seek the Lord for whatever reasons you desire. I AM saying, however, to PRAY BEFORE pursuing Him, lest your efforts are self-seeking. I AM also saying to explore a RELATIONSHIP with Yahweh - God; a connection with Him should be the goal because every egocentric intention behind building that relationship is an automatic benefit. Now, let's investigate some of its contexts. First, we don’t need to seek what we already have. We were ALL given the gift of the Spirit and of salvation after Jesus’ crucifixion (refer to Ephesians 2NIV, here http://shorturl.at/lmOT7), it is up to us whether or not we’ll accept that gift through confession of the mouth and believing in our hearts that Yeshua is our savior (refer to Romans 10:9 here http://shorturl.at/ktzO7). Without a frame of reference from its original text, some of the scriptures may appear to be contradictory, for lack of better terms. For instance, Proverbs 9:10 tells us that "fear is the beginning of wisdom," while 1 John 4:18 says, "there is no fear in love." Every believer knows that "God is love" (1 John 4:8), so then why would the Bible instruct us to fear the Lord when there's no fear in love, and God is love?

Let's begin with our featured scripture, Matthew 6:33, "seek ye FIRST the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and ALL these things shall be added unto you"; the term first is pretty straightforward, but since I'm putting some context on it, its Hebrew-Greek translation is prōton which refers to the place of importance - at the beginning, before all. Basically, this verse is telling us that BEFORE EVERYTHING else, with a continuous affinity, we ought to go after a relationship with the Lord. Now, let's revert to Proverbs 9:10 (read it here http://shorturl.at/IW138) and 1 John 4:18 (read it here http://shorturl.at/ejuwR) to break down the term fear itself. First off, contextually, fear in these verses have differing meanings - same English word, but different literal translation. In Proverbs 9:10 as well as Proverbs 1:7 (read it here http://shorturl.at/vwyU4), fear is referenced as yir'âh which can be defined as moral reverence or honor - fear in this scripture verse is produced by the Spirit and addresses our ability and willingness to be receptive to the provision of wisdom and knowledge from the Lord. On the other hand, fear in 1 John 4:18phobos, defined as terror, relates to being afraid of something or someone. The first verse is telling us that as we revere God, we develop a relationship with Him, and as that connection strengthens, we'll begin to understand the spiritual things revealed to us by the Spirit - wisdom, and knowledge. Whereas, the second biblical text is reminding us that when we're made mentally complete (teleios) in the Lord, we will not be paralyzed by adolescent angst. Similarly, fear in 2 Timothy 1:7 (read it here http://shorturl.at/cvISY), deilia, defined as timidity and cowardice that is in opposition to the actual power Yahweh fills our soul with when we seek Him.

So, the "contradiction" of the Word isn't in the Word itself, it is in our interpretation of it and our lack of due diligence in studying the rich contextual information outlined in the Bible. We must be mindful that reading does NOT equate to understanding. Within the Bible, there are 4 forms of context we should be reviewing in our biblical studies: the context of a single scripture verse, the context of its immediate verses before and after, the context of the chapter in its entirety, and the context as it relates to the message of the Bible as a whole. In Revelation 14:7 which reads, "Saying with a loud voice, 'Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters," we see fearphobéō, as an act of reverence and feeling of awe that compels us to respond or take action; the gist is this, as we seek the Lord our motivation should be to develop a relationship - courting Him, getting to KNOW who He really is to deepen our respect for Him. In relationship, we will naturally convert our desires to match His, transform our character to mirror His, which will cause us to ACT in that transformation over time. As we actively respond to our conversion, all of our needs will be met. That means, if we were in need of peace, salvation, courage, love, strength, or some other provision, prior to the start of our quest to find God, after we've revered ["feared"] Him to open the door to knowledge and wisdom of the spiritual things only understandable through the Spirit, then ALL those things will be benefits - the result - of the RELATIONSHIP we've established through adequate TIME spent in prayer, bible study, and individual worship. Just think of this change as a shedding of skin meant to cast off the old to reveal the new - you model the Lord so that when people encounter you, they encounter God.

We ask that we are removed from self, so that our thoughts, words, and actions may be moved by you. In the process of our pruning, we ask that our true purpose be revealed and/or the direction, understanding, and skill necessary to step into that purpose is defined and developed right away, so that we avoid idle time and precious moments being stagnant. Help us to exercise due diligence when studying your word and applying your decrees into our daily lives. We thank you for closing doors that are necessary for our growth while opening new windows of opportunities for transformation of a character that reflects you; keep us steadfast as we embark on the paths you've etched into our hearts, Father, so that we will remain obedience to you and continue to make choices in wisdom, not folly. Bless each of us individually providing all the tools necessary to balance our personal, professional, and spiritual lives.

As a person who has firsthand experience with depression and anxiety, I know the importance of seeking help early for mental health issues. Many people are reluctant to seek help for mental disabilities because of the stigma attached to them. PTSD, depression, and anxiety can be just as crippling as mental retardation if gone untreated. The effects of avoiding treatment such as counseling, or other forms of therapy, medication, holistic approaches, etc., can be fatal. I knew two people personally who took their own lives due to their struggles with mental health, and the fear attached to the possible judgments they might have received as opposed to their desired support. I'm here to tell you, some of our closest friends and relatives do have great intentions and may even have our best interest at heart, however, it is very difficult for a loved one to set aside biased feelings and let go of their emotions when someone they love is hurting. They tend to react without much thinking beforehand. Studying psychology helped me put some of my emotions into perspective, however, it was through talking to therapists, being transparent with anyone who'd listen, and not being afraid to tell a loved one to "listen and keep quiet, period," as well as finding other outlets such as writing, prayer, and exercise to help release some of my frustration, that truly helped me to cope with my emotions and learn to ultimately conquer them. If you're struggling with mental health issues, I encourage you to experiment with coping skills to determine which works best for you and make those practices a habit to help counteract negative emotions. And if someone you know has signs of mental illness, I can't stress enough, keep them in prayer, and show them your SUPPORT in the way that they NEED. YOU ARE NOT PSYCHIC, so DO NOT attempt to assume what their need or desire is when it comes to support, ASK, and then ACT.
