GREATEST Commandment (2/29/12)

Greetings Everyone,
All honor and praise be to God! As we bring Black History Month to a close, I would like to focus on Emmett W. Chappelle (1925-2005), an African American scientist who made valuable contributions in several fields: medicine, philanthropy, food science, and astrochemistry. Chappelle discovered that even one-celled plants such as algae, can convert carbon dioxide to oxygen, which helped to create a safe food supply for astronauts. Some of Chappelle's most interesting work was in the area of luminescence, which is light without heat. While designing instruments for the Mars Viking spacecraft, he became interested in bioluminescence, which is warm light produced by living organisms. Chappelle used two chemicals from fireflies which give off light when mixed with ATP (adenosine triphosphate), an energy storage compound found in all living cells, this could provide a method of detecting life on Mars. Mae Carol Jemison (1956 - age 55) is an American physician and NASA astronaut. She became the first Black woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992. Jemison served in the Peace Corps from 1985 to 1987. She resigned from NASA in 1993 to form a company researching the application of technology to daily life. She is a dancer, and holds 9 honorary doctorates in science, engineering, letters, and the humanities. Jemison is an active public speaker who appears before private and public groups promoting science and technology as well as providing an inspirational and educational message for young people. Daniel Hale Williams (1858-1931) was an American surgeon. He was the first African-American cardiologist, and performed one of the first successful open-heart surgeries in the United States. He also founded Provident Hospital, the first non-segregated hospital in the United States. In 1893, during the administration of President Grover Cleveland, Williams was appointed surgeon-in-chief of Freedman's Hospital in Washington, D.C.. In addition to organizing the hospital, Williams also established a training school for African-American nurses at the facility. He worked to create more hospitals and accessibility for African Americans. In 1895 he co-founded the National Medical Association for African American doctors, and in 1913 he became a charter member and the only African American doctor in the American College of Surgeons. And we'll close with Jewel Plummer Cobb (1924 - age 88). She is an African American Educator and Research Scientist. Cobb was awarded a Ph.D. in cell physiology from New York University in 1950, she has served as a researcher, a college professor and administrator, as well as a staunch supporter for greater minority participation in scientific careers. Much of Cobb's research has been focused on the skin pigment melanin, and her most significant research has been with testing new chemotherapeutic drugs in cancer cells, the impact of which continues. She has written often about racial and sexual discrimination in the sciences, and has raised funds to allow more minorities to enter into the field. I know that our history lessons were limited as a result of my illness and technical difficulties, but I hope that yall enjoyed the information I was able to provide. Continue to keep one another in prayer, thanking God for the victory, and refraining from claiming defeat from the enemy; ALWAYS pray for your desired result, NOT the unfavorable outcome. Do NOT lose sight of God in the midst of adversityGod Bless!

Passage Romans 6:6-7 (NLT):
"We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin."

Matthew 22:37-39 says, "Jesus replied, 'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' 'This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments." The whole moral of the Bible is Love, this passage even specifies that, "to Love the Lord and to Love your neighbors, is the FIRST and GREATEST commandment." Love conquers all and naturally drives the forces of good over evil. So if we concentrate of loving as God loves, unconditionally, then our paths will naturally start taking a turn for the better.

Prayer of the Day:
Lord God we thank you for your protection, love, grace, and forgiveness. We thank you for the peace that passeth all understanding, for bringing all those things that were once in the dark into the light, and for bringing clarity to some decisions that we need to make. We thank you for keeping us filled with the Spirit, that our tongue may be tamed, only formulating words that are good to edifying that they may minister grace to the hearer. We thank you for the ability, desire, and strength to love without conditions. Father God we thank you for our healing, restoration, deliverance, and mended hearts. We thank you for the strength to keep moving forward with a new attitude and gratitude. We thank you for all the trials and triumphs that help mold us into better examples of what it means to be a child of Christ. We thank you for your breath of life, and for providing yourself as a refuge when we have no where else to turn. We thank you for a renewed mind, and for deliverance of our debts by providing our every need as well as the desires of our heart, as they fall in line with your word and will. Thy will be done in our individual lives Father, and we thank you for the victory of it all. This is our affirmation of faith, that we present to you in name of Jesus, Amen!

REMEMBER! (2/28/12)

Greetings Everyone,
All honor and praise be to God! I know it's been a while but I ran into a couple of complications over the past few weeks. First, my MacBook decided to be a chameleon and act like a PC, so in the middle of trying to type up the SOD last week, my computer kept freezing and Safari kept shutting down "unexpectedly." Then, I caught a bug which cased my asthma to flareup severely, making my cough chronic and uncontrollable without the use of a prescription cough syrup, in conjunction with my inhalers, prednisone, and antibiotics. Then, as I was feeling well enough to type the SOD last night, I ran into another technical obstacle, my computer couldn't find my network. So, not only did you not receive the SOD, but I also failed at submitting proper class participation and my individual assignments for class Steaming mad But, I was talking to my Bestest, and he reminded me that all things happen for a reason. Honestly, the only thing I could think of is to stop procrastinating. Had I started my assignment when I was feeling well, perhaps I would've been able to submit it before my technical issues enhanced. The combination of technical problems and illness is not cool. Anyway, thanks for your concern and prayers rendered while I was under the weather. I am still claiming complete healing in the name of Jesus, and thank you in advance for doing the same. I know that we have approached the last few days in Black History Month, but I will continue where I left off, and today I will provide information on two unsung African Americans from history: Martin Robison Delaney (1812–1885) was an African American abolitionist, journalist, physician, and writer, arguably the first proponent of American Black nationalism. He was one of the first three blacks admitted to Harvard Medical School. He became the first African-American field officer in the United States Army during the American Civil War. Trained as an assistant and a physician, he treated patients during the cholera epidemics of 1833 and 1854 in Pittsburgh, when many doctors and residents fled the city. Rebecca J. Cole (1846–1922) was an American physician. In 1867, she became the second African American woman to become a doctor in the United States. In 1873, she opened a Women's Directory Center to provide medical and legal services to destitute women and children. Cole would make house calls to people in the poorest neighborhoods and would teach women about basic hygiene and childcare.

I Chronicles 16:11-12 says, "Search for the LORD and for his strength; continually seek him. Remember the wonders he has performed, his miracles, and the rulings he has given." I deem this to be perfect scripture in lieu of our closing this series dedicated to Black History Month, and my recent obstacles. It's really easy for us to turn to others, or look to self when we are in need. It is easy for us to turn our backs on the Lord when things are not going the way that we would desire them to go. But you know what, I will guarantee that no matter what it is you are going through, IF you know the Lord, then you will find solace in remembering ALL the wonderful blessings HE has bestowed upon you. So the next time you sneeze, cough, or feel a pain, thank God that you still have the sensation of feeling. When your head is hurting, or your back is aching, thank the Lord for sight, hearing, and taste. And when you feel like you've reached your limit, praise the Lord for your support system here on Earth. And remember that if your "support" is no where to be found, know that GOD has a 24 hour hot line called PRAYER"In ALL things GIVE THANKS! Remember the wonders HE has... GIVEN."

Prayer of the Day:
Father God we enter into your presence in thanksgiving, praising you for your grace, mercy, forgiveness, and everlasting love. We thank you that no weapon formed against us will ever prosper in the name of Jesus. Lord we thank you for the authority to claim and accept victory over the enemy and defeat over sin. We thank you for the ability in our own words to speak life into every situation, speaking prosperity, success, and positivity into existence. We use the power of our tongue to reverse all negativity we once spoke into our own lives, and we bind now the negativity spoken by others, and make their words ineffective against us in the matchless name of Jesus. We thank you for complete and speedy recovery for Tylesha. And Lord we thank you for your continued protection and mercy. This is our affirmation of faith in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

Blessed Triumphantly (2/15/12)

Greetings Everyone,
All honor and glory to God! Today's Black History lesson is on Gordon Roger Alexander Buchanan Parks (1912 – 2006). He was a groundbreaking American photographer, musician, poet, novelist, journalist, activist and film director. Part social justice activist, part visionary, and full time photographer, Gordon Parks was the first African American to work as a photographer for the Farm Security Administration. There, he developed a powerful documentary style depicting slums, poverty, and the marginal existences of African Americans. In 1948, he became a photographer for Life magazine—their first African American photographer-—and worked at the magazine for the next quarter century. Later, Parks would direct eight films, ranging from documentaries to thrillers. In 1969, he became the first black director for a major Hollywood studio when Warner Brothers released The Learning Tree, a film based on Parks’ autobiographical novel. From there he went on to several commercial successes, including Shaft (1971) and Shaft’s Big Score (1972). Over the years, Parks published a number of novels and memoirs as well as poetry. An extraordinary musician, he also composed classical, blues, and popular music. On another note, for those of you who may not know this, my sorority is sponsoring an event in lieu of Black History Month this Saturday. Please see the attachment and use the contacts listed or get with me ASAP if you would like to attend. Thanks in advance for your support.

**Random thought: it is NOT cool to fall asleep on the couch with my laptop on lap, as I lay toward one side, awakened at midnight by my frozen extremities, and then attempt to carry-on with typing the SOD** Psalm 129:3-4 says, "My back is covered with cuts, as if a farmer had plowed long furrows. But the LORD is good; he has cut me free from the ropes of the ungodly." This passage clearly speaks about painful punishment in the ancient times, and unjust beatings. But this Psalm is a testament if you will, of God's great glory and authority to free us from the captivity forced upon us by the adversary. We may spend years drenched in iniquities, but in the end we prevail when God rescues us from the enemy's stronghold; God's children will always be blessed triumphantly.

Agape Love (2/14/12)

Greetings Everyone,
Happy Valentine's Day! I swear satan really has nothing else better to do than to mess with God's children, X( angryUGH! Anyway, I just want to thank you for all of your prayers; my cousin's brain surgery today was successful, and she is doing well and even talking. Today's lesson in Black History is on Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965). She was the first African-American woman playwright to have a play produced on Broadway. Hansberry is best known for A Raisin in the Sun, which was inspired by her family's battle against racial segregation in Chicago. She contributed to the understanding of abortion, discrimination, and Africa. She joined the Daughters of Bilitis and contributed letters to their magazine, The Ladder, in 1957 that addressed feminism and homophobia. After a battle with pancreatic cancer, Hansberry died at the age of 34. She left behind an unfinished novel and several other plays, includingThe Drinking Gourd and What Use Are Flowers?, with a range of content, from slavery to a post apocalyptic future. Continue to keep one another in prayer, thanking God for the victory, and refraining from claiming defeat from the enemy; ALWAYS pray for your desired result, NOT the unfavorable outcome. Do NOT lose sight of God in the midst of adversity, God Bless!

Passage Romans 12: 9-10, & 17-18 (NLT):
"Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone."

In lieu of Valentine's Day, I thought we'd talk about God's love - "Agape" love, which means UNCONDITIONAL love. My cousin Marlene and I were talking today about how easy it is for people to forgive their friends, boyfriends, and/or girlfriends, but forgiving their family is like trying to pull their teeth without novocaine. What's up with that? Why is it so easy to love someone when it is reciprocated? Why is it easy to praise the Lord when everything is going our way, but we are so quick to turn our backs on God and our loved ones the moment things get rocky, instantly forgetting all of our fortunes? Probably because the human mind thinks rationally according to societal norms, and accepts only what is tangible. Therefore, human logic is to give and receive... a tit for tat type of approach. But God's word says in I John 4:19-21"We love each other because he loved us first. If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their Christian brothers and sisters." As it translates in The Message, this passage reads, "We, though, are going to love—love and be loved. First we were loved, now we love. He loved us first. If anyone boasts, "I love God," and goes right on hating his brother or sister, thinking nothing of it, he is a liar. If he won't love the person he can see, how can he love the God he can't see? The command we have from Christ is blunt: Loving God includes loving people. You've got to love both." I Corinthians 13:4-8says, "Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance... love will last forever!" This is the national day of love, so if God is Love, then it only makes sense for us to practice agape love, NOT just this one day each year, but EVERY DAY; we need to show an UNCONDITIONAL gratitude to the Lord for ALL the many blessings He has afforded us, and learn to LET GO of the past, forgive and LOVE everyone the way that God so loves us

Prayer of the Day:
Father God we praise you for your unconditional grace, mercy, and love, and for your 24/7 hedge of protection around us. Lord we thank you for Trese's successful surgery and thank you in advance for her complete and speedy recovery. Lord God we thank you for the ability and authority in our words to speak life and favorable outcomes into every situation. We thank you for your spiritual guidance that leads us down a path of righteousness; thanking you that everything that we think, do, and say, may mimic your Son Christ Jesus, and be honorable, and acceptable to you. We thank you for revealing our capability to adopt the principles of agape love, and put them into practice, forgiving those who may have wronged us and loving everyone without conditions. This is our affirmation of Faith, we present this claim to you, and thank you now for the victory, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

Show your gratitude (2/13/12)

Greetings Everyone,
I hope yall had a blessed weekend. My apologies for Friday... I had several errands to run and by the time I got home, I literally slept until Saturday afternoon. Anyway, my cousin Trese is having surgery tomorrow (today), so please keep her recovery in prayer, thanks. To continue with our Black History lessons, today we learn about Phillis Wheatley (1753-1784). Wheatley was the first African American poet and first African-American woman to publish her writing. Born in Gambia, Senegal, she was sold into slavery at about age eight and transported to North America. She was purchased by the Wheatley family of Boston, who taught her to read and write, and encouraged her poetry when they saw her talent.

Philippians 2:5-8 says, "You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross." As translated in The Message it reads, "Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn't think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn't claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion." The Trinity is comprised of the Father God, the Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. These three are separate entities which form one deity. Think of the Trinity as a body, there's a head, a torso, and extremities; God is the head, Jesus is the torso, and the extremities are represented by the Spirit, all three are necessary for complete functionality. Despite Jesus' divine position, He loved us so much that He gave Himself up to be crucified that we may live eternal life with Him forever. That sacrifice alone is reason enough for us to send God praises all the time, NOT only when things are going our way. Now, I will not go so far as to suggest that slaves were in the same boat as Christ, but I will say that their sacrifice, and their hardships are what established the way for African Americans today to sit wherever they want on a bus, to share the same facilities as Whites, and provided a sense of equality that was not afforded their ancestors. Show your gratitude to the Lord for His sacrifice, and the sacrifices and struggles from those who preceded us (not limited to African American slaves), fighting and enduring great hardships to help build a foundation where color-lines are nonexistent.

Prayer of the Day:
Lord God we praise your Holy name, thanking you for salvation. We thank you for the leaders now who develop ways for new generations, and for the leaders before us who made a way for our parents and grandparents; no matter race, color, or creed, we thank you for all the leaders who have contributed to the foundation which allows each of us to flourish today. Father God we thank you in advance for Trese's successful surgery, and complete and speedy recovery; oversee her procedure and steady the hands of her surgeons. We thank you for our ministry and fellowship. We thank you for the ability to sup with one another and not be divided by our genetic make-up or gender. Father God we thank you for the blessings received through the tears and sweat from the individuals who preceded us. We thank you for your continued love, support, and protection. Father God through all of our trials YOU grant us a way through your Son Christ Jesus, and for that we give you the ultimate praise. Hallelujah Father, we thank you! We submit this affirmation of faith in the heavenly name of your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen!

Freed from bondage (2/9/12)

Greetings Everyone,
All honor and glory to God! Today in Black History, we learn about James Armistead Lafayette (1760-1830). Armistead was the first African American double spy. He was a slave, owned by William Armistead in Virginia during the American Revolution. After getting consent of his master, he volunteered in 1781 to join the army under General Lafayette. He was stationed as a spy and was sent by General Lafayette to provide false information on American movements to the British. First he spied on Brigadier General Benedict Arnold. The intelligence reports from his espionage were instrumental in helping to defeat the British during the Battle of Yorktown. Armistead often traveled between camps, spying on British officers, who spoke openly about their strategies in front of him. He documented this information in written reports, and delivered them to other American spies. After the war, he returned to William Armistead as a slave, because he was considered an intelligence agent and not technically a soldier, so he could not qualify for emancipation under the Act of 1783. In 1784, Lafayette found Armistead in Virginia and was disappointed to find he was still a slave. Lafayette wrote a testimonial on Armistead's behalf and two years later, the Virginia General Assembly emancipated him. It was at that time that Armistead made "Lafayette" his last name, in honor of the General.

Romans 7:1-4 says, "Now, dear brothers and sisters—you who are familiar with the law—don't you know that the law applies only while a person is living? For example, when a woman marries, the law binds her to her husband as long as he is alive. But if he dies, the laws of marriage no longer apply to her. So while her husband is alive, she would be committing adultery if she married another man. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law and does not commit adultery when she remarries. So, my dear brothers and sisters, this is the point: You died to the power of the law when you died with Christ. And now you are united with the one who was raised from the dead. As a result, we can produce a harvest of good deeds for God." In the flesh we are bound by the laws of this world and satan's reign. However, when we are reborn through acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior, we are freed from bondage and given the free-will to either give-in to the adversary's negative influences which lead to eternal death, or to accept God's deliverance, becoming transformed by the renewing of our mind, ultimately leading to a life of righteousness and eternal life/happiness. The Life Application Study Bible New International Version (1991) reminds us that God's "Spirit enables us to produce good fruit... We now serve not by obeying a set of rules, but out of renewed hearts and minds that overflow with love for God," which influences our CHOICE to follow God's will and NOT a life led by the enemy or our own selfish desires(Reference: The Life Application Study Bible New International Version. (1991). Romans Chapter 7 - Footnotes (p. 2039). Wheaton, IL: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.)

Lord we thank you for your continued protection and mercy. This is our affirmation of faith in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
