The Great Escape (2/28/2021)

SALUTATIONS: What up yall? Hope yall had a wonderful February... man two months into the new year already. I can't believe I've been blessed with 40 years of life next month, and I've spent four of these wonderful years as a mother... The message tonight is piggyback from one my sister shared with me called, "Heart Rehab: It Started In Childhood" by Jerry Flowers (watch the 38-minute YouTube video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHFnW6Nvr9Y); man, did that message hit hard. So tonight, join me as we plan the great escape from generational cycles so that they are not transferred to the generations hereafter. Let's dive in. As always, take time to review ALL of the AnnouncementsHealthy Living Tips, and other information detailed below, following the Reflections and Power in Prayer, whenever time permits. Your continued support is always appreciated. Keep spreading God's Gospel and feel free to share the Scripture of the Week with the hashtag SOW. Enjoy! **Disclaimer: Production and distribution days of the SOW are subject to change without warning**

PRAISE REPORTS: I want to thank God for life, motherhood, growth, and healing. Oh Lord, we thank you through our struggles, we praise you for our past trials, our current obstacles, and our future triumphs. Help us in our unbelief. Hallelujah! If you have a specific praise report, please share, because we “overcame [the adversary] by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of [our] testimony” (Revelation 12:11). **NOTE: All praise reports are shared with reference to your name unless anonymity is specified**

PRAYER REQUESTS: Let us pray this week for children and adults who have been or are being abused, whether sexually or other. Let's continue to pray for one another and thank Yahweh for the victory while refraining from confessing the problem caused by the enemy; ALWAYS pray for the desired result, NOT the unfavorable outcome (refer to the book The Tongue – A Creative Force, by Charles Capps; you can download your FREE copy here https://rb.gy/niy4go). If you or someone you know needs prayer, let me know, and your request will be added to the following SOW. **NOTE: All prayer requests are shared with reference to your name and need unless anonymity is specified**

BE ENCOURAGED: NEVER lose sight of God amidst adversity… Ponder this: "To escape fear, you have to go through it, not around it" (Richie Norton). I'm no theological scholar, and even if I were a pastor or an expert on God's word, I would still advise you NEVER to take someone else's word as solid truth; "Study to show thyself approved" (2 Timothy 2:15), and CHALLENGE EVERYTHING by comparing it to the Word of God. If what you see, hear, or read does NOT fall in line with the Word of God, then it is NOT true... The rest of this day isn't promised, let alone tomorrow, so why not strengthen your faith TODAY? Feed your body healthy nutrition, be cautious of what things you allow your eyes, ears, and spirit to be exposed to (e.g., media, books, TV, music, etc.) so that YOU can start anew and become a better you NOW, rather than later. If you need someone to help you get there, or you're looking for an accountability partner, you've come to the right place. Here I am.

FEATURED SONGS OF PRAISE: "Live Through It" by James Fortune & FIYA (you can listen to it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThOGWMEGHM4) and "Cycles (feat. DOE)" by Jonathan McReynolds (you can listen to it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Eu2aYgWmVA). **Correction to last week's SOW Featured Songs of Praise: I had originally selected a song by a praise group from an SDA church but chose to change the selection to "You Will Win" by Jekalyn Carr, however, I inadvertently left "a group of singers" noted before her name, as if she was a place as opposed to the artist.** I would also like to recommend Classical for Studying Radio on Pandora to better facilitate your meditation on the Word as you study, you can listen to that station here https://rb.gy/wtbmva.

OPENING PRAYER: Yahweh, please let your presence set the tone for how this lesson will flow and how we will grow from it. Clear our mind and open our eyes, ears, and heart so that we may be decreased in self and increased in you. Fill us with your presence through the Holy Spirit to see as we look, to listen as we hear, to come into alignment with your word and your will, to receive, believe, and apply your truth, that we may be transformed by your intended message from this fellowship and become better as a result of it. In the name of Yeshua, Amen!

KEY PASSAGE(S) – MATTHEW 2:13-16 (NIV)"13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. 'Get up,' he said, 'take the child and His mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill Him.' 14 So he got up, took the child and His mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'Out of Egypt I called my Son.' 16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi."

**Unless otherwise indicated all Scripture quotations are taken from the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible retrieved from https://www.biblegateway.com/passage**

REFLECTIONS: At the beginning of chapter 2, we see that the 3 wise men arrived in Jerusalem in search of the "King of the Jews" to "worship Him" (read Matthew 2:1-2 here https://rb.gy/xatcju) and Herod wasn't feeling that. So, yo boy put a hit out on Jesus in an effort to cease a potential threat. God had to secure His plan, so He sent an angel to warn Joseph to "take [Jesus] and His mother and escape to Egypt... where he stayed until the death of Herod" (Matthew 2:1315NIV). So look, God being the Heavenly Father that He is, recognized that His child's life was in danger, put the earthly father up on game, and secured the great escape.

So many of us with a calling have experienced some form of childhood abuse and/or become products of generational cycles. I can attest to both. Sometimes we battle with our past and even question God because we don't understand how God could allow our innocence to be tainted. We grow up wondering, "Where was my protection?" We develop unhealthy distrust - we do not trust adults, we've given up trust in God, we lack trust in our relationships, even in ourselves, and so forth. Many of us turn to situationships looking to mend the abandonment, neglect, and loneliness we've grown accustomed to as we disassociate ourselves from healthy coping. Instead, we turn to reckless behavior, continuing the transference of generational cycles, on a dead-end journey to happiness rather than the wholeness we'd find if we only allowed God to transform and mature us.

Notice the parallels in the text. Herod sought to "kill" Jesus while He was still a baby. To prevent any potential threats this "King of the Jews" might stir up in his kingdom, Herod ordered EVERY child "two years old and under" to be executed. I mean, I don't know exactly how old Herod was, but why was he so concerned with a child? He wasn't concerned with the child, it was the risk he recognized; he aimed to stop the opposition before a threat could even be matured. Oh, how the devil works so similarly. What better way to stop a king from sitting on his throne, or a queen from sitting on hers, than to kill their spirit, steal their joy, and destroy their identity in Christ? The "adversary, the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8) and childhood trauma is an attack that oftentimes prevents our maturity in Christ.

The same way the adversary attacks the family unit because he knows togetherness and love conquers a multitude of sin (read 1 Peter 4:8NIV, here https://rb.gy/muopth) - stopping the unification by establishing entanglements in situationships, or marriages that were never ordained so that they the family is broken before it ever even forms, he also seeks to attack the individual whom he knows has a calling on his or her life. Are you driven by the person at work or school who puts forth zero effort, or, are you motivated by the one who serves as competition for the promotion you've been waiting on? Some of you may think neither, or, perhaps both. But I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of us would say the latter. Just the same, if we can overcome our adversity and weaponize our stories - our testimonies - rather than allowing an internal untold story to fester into misery, then we can influence the masses as we live in love and harmony despite our misfortune and/or trauma.

Unfortunately, when the devil attacks us while we're still developing, and the adults before us fell victim to generational cycles themselves, then there is a failure to map out an efficient escape. As a parent, because of my childhood, one of my toughest fears is that my son is exposed to sexual abuse - any form of abuse, really. So, I'm constantly observing behaviors, and having discussions so that if he is exposed to some trash, I can protect him. The great escape doesn't have to be taken literally, escaping in this context is relative to protection and healing; we have to be mindful of the fact that perhaps the ones we feel that neglected us or failed to protect us, had failed to be protected themselves. Those who should've spearheaded our escape - our healing and protection, were abused themselves and victims of generational cycles that had not yet been broken.

Here's the thing, the devil doesn't have to create a new wound in your family line when the old one is still open. Jerry Flowers said it like this, "If it doesn't get transformed, it gets transferred"; for every individual in your family that has experienced the same or similar abuse, it was because Satan attacked them while there were still developing, silencing their internal stories, because he knew that they would be a threat to his reign over darkness. The devil probably knows the Word better than most of us, that's why he can manipulate the trials he presents us with so that it distorts our image of God so that we think of our anxiety, depression, addiction, substance abuse, situationships, and reckless behavior as embellishments to our character and personalities - as part of who we are. The reality is, accepting those negative traits and habits as who you are, means that you have no idea of whose you are. It's like choosing to wear dirty sneakers with a tux, or a jean jacket with an evening gown - terrible accessory choices.

We must deal with our internal story, be it via counseling, a support group, or a blog, our stories must be shared because someone somewhere is facing the same obstacles, and our testimony may be what frees them. The enemy wants to break us because he knows what we have to say will break some cycles; he knows that when we come into wholeness with God, and allow Him to mature our walk, our talk, our words, and our actions, our growth will plant seeds for others to grow as well. But the longer we allow our trauma to distort our discernment, the longer we'll feel that level of unsuccess, unfulfillment, unrest, loneliness, and void. Who we've become due to what someone did, does NOT define us. Our confidence is lacking because we haven't fully shared the authentic version of ourselves, which lies in our shame, our guilt, our past, and our trauma.

The goal is not to disband from ourselves, rather, we need to separate from our poor patterns. Your testimony serves as a form of deliverance for someone with a similar struggle; your silence gives Satan victory over your maturity, and with that stunted growth, someone's freedom is being denied. Anything that interrupts your growth and maturity should be identified as a distraction/pattern that you ought to break-up with. God is in the business of making us whole, not happy. Happiness is a choice; how you choose to react to your circumstances and/or empower or disempower your past, is totally up to you. Start by using your story to help others. Forgive yourself for the poor decisions you made along the way out of ignorance, but more importantly, forgive those who may have failed you, being sensitive to the fact that they most likely did the best they could with what they knew at the time; when someone fails you, 9 times out of 10, it's probably because someone failed them too - it may be the only way they knew how to respond because no one taught them the proper way. It is now our duty to "train up a child in the way he should go [so that] when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6), but the first child we must work on is the one we buried deep inside the pain of our trauma.

As we take heed to our maturity in Christ, it's also important to affirm His word in and over our lives, because "faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). Aside from our childhood trauma catalyzing how we choose to react to our circumstances, the adversary knows that as children, we are trusting, loving, and the most willing to learn Christ-like characteristics, so as he distorts our image of the Lord, therein he develops in us a blurred vision of self and a jacked-up perception of everything around us. In turn, those warped perceptions keep us from achieving full development in Christ; "the enemy knows that "unless [we] change and become like little children, [we] will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven" (Matthew 8:3NIV). Simply put, as long as the devil has leverage over our past through our silence, unforgiveness, unhealthy patterns, bad habits, and immaturity, we will never fully trust in the Lord the way a child trusts his or her parent. If we don't set out to transform, with intention, our hurt and fear into the power, love, and self-discipline that God equipped us with (read 2 Timothy 1:7 here https://rb.gy/d48lvw), then we create momentum for cycles to carry over into the generations after us.

Whose you are, is God's, not the mistakes you've made along the way. What you think and what you do matters. Your impact matters. Your story can inspire others and in turn, by sharing it, you step into healing and begin to break the generational cycles, and step into the position for which God called you. Adulthood is right around the corner, but first, you must become child-like in Christ and allow Him to help you make the great escape from who you were to where and who you are called to be, in Him. Step into your maturity, it's time to reclaim your throne kings and queens. #SOW

POWER IN PRAYER: POWER IN PRAYER: Our Father, Our Friend, Our provider, our Healer, we thank you for the power, love, and self-discipline that you've equipped us with. In the name of your Son, Jesus, we activate those traits and ask that you accelerate them so that we trust you to bring us into full maturity in you. Father, for those of us reading this and those attached to us, or associated in any way, as well as those who are not, who have suffered childhood trauma and/or are still struggling with its remembrance, help us to weaponize our stories; help our testimony be the voice to those who may have lost theirs. As we tell our unsung stories, may our misery be transformed into peace and joy in knowing that you never left us, we just got lost along the way. Thank you for helping us to recognize that in you we have a potential that serves as a threat to the adversary, and therefore, our resilience and patience in your process and timing will send victory knocking on our doors. We thank you for releasing our authenticity to get a grip on our confidence. We thank you for reassuring us that we are not defined by our past nor our poor decisions as a result of, but that we are identified as your children when we earnestly seek you and allow you to work through us to carry out the kingdom agenda that you have placed on our lives. We can never match your grace and mercy with our praise, but we can try. Father, we're grateful for your support, acceptance, love, grace, and mercy. We thank you for helping us drop the ugly accessories and replace them with your full armor. We praise you for teaching us to break up with our patterns, not our person. We thank you for empowering us to step into our maturity by forgiving ourselves and forgiving those who we feel failed us, to dead generational cycles, and to accept the throne waiting for us in your Kingdom. Repair our unbelief, mend our distrust, and remove anything hindering us from using our trauma to empower ourselves and others. Your Word says where two or more are gathered, there you are. You said, ask and we shall receive, knock and the door shall be opened, seek and we shall find, well here we are, Father, show up and show out on behalf of your Truth. May your will be done in our lives, and may our trust in you be solid enough to render this request genuine in your sight. As your angels and Holy Spirit do your bidding on Earth and in Heaven, protect us and them with your recourse as you bind, loose, and cast out the demonic spirits of distraction, destruction, retaliation, revenge, and backlash. All these things we ask in the matchless name of Yeshua, Amen!

HEALTHY LIVING TIPS: Change begins within... If you're looking for a quick full-body workout, here's one that you can complete in under 35 minutes:

  • 15-minute run or jog (for a lower impact you can do a brisk walk with ankle weights for some extra resistance, or without) - running, jogging, and walking can help the development of lean muscle, build strong bones, and improve cardiovascular health.
  • 4 rounds of 30-rep crunches - crunches help to develop your core muscles
  • 1 round of 30-rep situps with a Russian twist in the up position - situps also help to improve core strength, which contributes to improved posture and lessens your chance for back injuries in later years.
  • 5 rounds of 10-rep pushups (standard and/or knee position) - pushups build upper body strength, strengthen your back, and can also improve core strength and posture.

Remember, it is important to stretch before and after exercise to reduce achy muscles and to prevent injuries. As always, be mindful of the things you feed your body, both physically and figuratively. Be safe, be blessed, and prioritize your health and wellbeing!

Without Compromise (2/21/2021)

SALUTATIONS: Hey yall. Many Christians would argue that it isn't possible to integrate into the popular culture without compromising one's beliefs but I beg to differ. In tonight's lesson, we're going to explore how 4 young men were uprooted from their upbringing and forced to take on new names, a new language, and a new cultural experience, all without compromising their devotion to God. Let's get into it.

PRAISE REPORTS: I want to thank God for opportunities to serve others; it's always rewarding to be part of service to the disadvantaged.

PRAYER REQUESTS: My book arrived, I was so excited until I noticed the marked price was extremely high for my target audience and its content. So, instead of allowing the adversary to steal my joy, I decided to put it in God's hand; let's ask God to work out a reasonable price for Color Isn't Who I AM so that it'll reach a bookshelf near you, sooner rather than later.

BE ENCOURAGED: NEVER lose sight of God amidst adversity… Ponder this: "Never compromise who you are for anyone. If they don't like you the way you are, it's better if they leave than you losing your identity" (kushandwizdom.tumblr.com). I would also like to recommend Classical for Studying Radio on Pandora to better facilitate your meditation on the Word as you study, you can listen to that station here https://rb.gy/wtbmva.

KEY PASSAGE(S) – DANIEL 1:8, 11-13"8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. 11 Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. 13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants."

**Unless otherwise indicated all Scripture quotations are taken from the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible retrieved from https://www.biblegateway.com/passage**

REFLECTIONS: To give some context to this passage, God allowed Nebuchadnezzar, king over Babylon, to siege Jerusalem. As a show of his position, he had his chief officer take captive handsome young men who were physically fit, endowed with knowledge, and of nobility. Once the chief official scooped up Daniel and his boys Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah among other Israelites, he assigned the four of them to Melzar. Melzar was tasked with teaching the language and indoctrinating them into the Babylonian culture - a culture that did not honor God - to feed them from the king's royal menu, all while training them for 3 years in preparation for a position of service to King Nebuchadnezzar.

But first, your boy had to break them down... ironically, there are some parallels when it comes to the position of authority for kings and how their methods were very similar to God's, yet, self-serving. Anyway, not only did Nebuchadnezzar integrate them into a new culture and introduce them to their new language, he changed them boys' God-centered names to derivatives of those centered around the Babylonians' false gods. Daniel, which means, God is my judge, was renamed Belteshazzar (he whom Bel favors); Bel was a god that the Babylonians worshipped. Hananiah (Yah has been gracious) became Shadrach (inspired of Aku), Mishael (who is what God is) was renamed Meshach (belonging to Aku), and Azariah (Yah has helped) became Abednego (servant of Nego); Aku and Nego were also false gods of the Babylonian culture.

Can yall see the parallels yet? God originated name changes when He changed Abram's name to Abraham; the name-change reflected a transition from an ill-meaning name, in which we notice throughout the Bible that the characters lived up to their names, to a meaningful name that represented a transformation from a life without God, to one that was centered in Him. By removing these four from their own devout culture, Nebuchadnezzar was intentional in his attempt to change their religious loyalty by altering their names and assimilating them into Babylonian traditions so to speak.

We know that in Jewish culture back then, even still today, there are strict dietary rules and special celebratory holidays that are adhered to, to pay homage to God for rescuing the Israelites out of Egypt. Now, I'm not certain exactly what the "daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank" (Daniel 1:5) was but presumably it was something that went against the specific instruction of God, outlined in Leviticus 11 (read it here https://rb.gy/pkffu7). But let's take it one step further. You see, the KJV of Daniel 1:8 says, "Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank." But let's look at the NIV, it says, "Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine." I didn't have to look up what resolved meant because my study bible defined it as "a strong word that means to be devoted to principle and to be committed to a course of action" (Life Application Study BibleKJVnotespg. 1202).  What if, when Daniel asked the Melzar permission not to defile himself, his true reason revolved around his allegiance and trust in God?

Think about it, Daniel and his boys were already subjected to undergo a name-change and culture shock, if they had also gone full-in accepting the king's choice of food, would not a dependence had been presumable by the king? You see, by Daniel asking permission to eat "pulse" (Daniel 1:12) which is another word for vegetables, despite having already made up in his heart (resolved) that he had no intention on partaking of the king's meat, he was extending a certain level of respect for the authority that he was currently under, which is part of his devotion to God's law (read Titus 3:1 and Romans 13:1-2NIV, here https://rb.gy/4f7vtl). Their moral conviction impacted Melzar so much that he obliged. Sounds easy enough, but in those days, to disobey the king was like sentencing yourself to death - it was an offense punishable by execution. Paradoxically, Daniel and his boys' fear of the Lord drove them to remain unwavering in their cultural traditions that honored God in a society with a mislaid moral compass, while Melzar's fear of execution had no bearing against his favor for the four men, because their conviction was so solid that they even challenged him to test them. After the 10-day test to see if them boys were going to be uber scrawny from consuming only veggies and water, they "proved" (Daniel 1:12) that God's provision is sufficient, and that without compromise, their devotion to God in a Godless society still rendered divine favor, supreme clarity, and levelheadedness.

It is not enough for us to want to do God's will; want cannot stand against temptation, we must resolve (be devoted, committed) beforehand, to obey God. That means, we ought to take a self-assessment to determine what our weaknesses are as it relates to temptation so that we can recognize our patterns and triggers, and learn from them. Consider these questions:
  • What things, environments, people, circumstances are tempting to me, and how?
  • In what ways have I been presented with these temptations and gave in (failed the test)?
  • In what way did God provide an out, but I rejected it?
  • What warning signs or red flags did I notice yet ignored?
  • What are my triggers?
  • If this is something I really don't want to do, why am I still doing it?
  • What benefit does it render if I continue?
  • How will my life improve when I stop?
  • How can I be proactive?
Here's an example, if you're tempted by smoking, consider the effects of the substance you're choosing to smoke. How does it make you feel? What contributes to your desire to smoke? What environments encourage your participation in smoking? Who influences or provokes you to smoke? If you wish you didn't smoke, why do you choose to keep smoking? Consider this, if your desire is not to engage in a certain behavior yet you keep doing it, then your reason why you should stop hasn't been clarified and committed into your heart. Every reason you come up with to validate your temptation is merely an excuse, especially when the bad outweighs the benefit of avoidance and proactivity.

We are living in a Godless society that honors money, relationships, material things, and status over God. Yet, as you think through your temptations before they arise, decide where to draw the line, establish your commitment so that when temptation arrives, you are prepared/ready to say "no." In a world that loves to love gods over God, it is possible to display discipline, integrity, and stability in our beliefs, which in turn generates universal respect from believers and non-believers alike. There is always a way to live by God's standards even in a culture that chooses not to honor Him; if it doesn't violate His commands, then use it to aid in accomplishing His purpose. As we take a stand on our convictions, outsiders witness an example that gives honor and glory back to God. He'll ride for you, as you stand for Him WITHOUT compromise. #SOW

POWER IN PRAYER: POWER IN PRAYER: Our Father, Almighty Provider, our Alpha, and Omega, we thank you for the power in the name of your Son, Jesus. We bless you for your eternal love, and clear direction. We thank you for equipping us with resilience, strength, and an uncompromising spirit for a life better served with you. Father, we give you Color Isn't Who I AM; fore who has the final say but you, Father? We thank you for working on the heart of the publishing company to tag Tylesha's book at a reasonable retail price so that her book is more accessible to everyone, including low-income families with young children who can benefit from its message. Lord, our provisions from you are boundless and our words can never express enough praise. We're grateful for your support; Lord, when no one else is here to listen to our cries, or to pick us up when we fall, you are. We appreciate your everlasting grace and mercy. There is no other like you, and despite our disobedience and failure to remain faithful in service to you and in trusting you wholeheartedly, you still love us. May our stance be as yours, everlasting, founded, grounded, and centered in you, so that we are proactive and considering our temptations beforehand so that when we're faced with them, we're bold and courageous enough to walk away from them. May we embody a spirit of non-negotiable character when it comes to walking in our God-driven purpose. When we pray, help us not to worry. Fix our unbelief and mend our distrust; show up and show out in case we've forgotten who's in control of it all, regardless of outer appearances.

Let's talk about the gastrointestinal tract aka, your gut. Your gut is extremely important to your overall health. When your gut health is out of wack, the unstable bacteria can lead to chronic diseases and GI conditions such as acid reflux, GERD, indigestion, peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, and hemorrhoids, to name a few.

If you're anything like me, you may suffer from 1 or more of the conditions I just mentioned. However, no need to be discouraged, there are some good ways you can improve your gut health. Here are some of the most common ways to improve gut health:
  • Take a probiotic and/or prebioticprobiotics are specific strains of bacteria that directly add to the population of healthy microbes in your gut, whereas, prebiotics are specialized plant fibers that act like fertilizers that stimulate the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut.
  • Eat fermented foods: eating foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi are natural sources for probiotics, they add beneficial bacteria and enzymes to your overall intestinal tract, increasing its health and simultaneously enhancing both your digestive and immune systems.
  • Consume fiber: fiber increases the weight and size of your stool and softens it, helping to maintain bowel health.
  • Drink water: drinking water during and/or after meals aids in digestion, it helps break down food so that your body can absorb its nutrients. H2O also softens stool, which aids in the prevention of constipation.

Daily Bread (2/14/2021)

SALUTATIONS: Hey yall. Happy Valentine's Day. If you're alone for this pagan celebratory occasion, SO WHAT! Celebrate waking up above ground today. Celebrate the Love that the Lord graciously shares with you every moment He provides breath to your lungs. Be content in your singleness, if that so applies to you. If not, for all those who are fortunate to have a helpmate or significant other in their lives, do not make this one "holiday" the only time you deem necessary to show your special someone that they matter in your life. Just like Christmas... wait, has anyone ever realized that it's Christ-Mas, as in Christ more (mas being the Spanish equivalent of more)? Reversed... more Christ? Just peeped that myself, anyway, just like the concept of Christ-mas should be a 365 day of the year principle, so should Valentine's Day. If you're solo, love on yourself (not speaking inappropriately, for those with minds that wander). If you have someone special, a husband, wife, fiancé, boyfriend, girlfriend, or partner, show them they matter throughout the year. If you can't hack that, then yeah, use this day to ensure they at least catch a glimpse of romanticism from you. Just because your V-Day didn't go as well as you'd hope, don't go bringing down someone else's. Your mind may thirst for attention and affection the same way the physical body hungers for food. However, the soul hungers for sustenance just the same. Allow the Lord to serve your soul its daily bread. Let's jump into this lesson.

PRAISE REPORTS: My personal copy of my 1st published book is scheduled to arrive in a few days. I'm super excited and thankful to be so close to becoming an official author. I wouldn't have gotten this far if the Spirit hadn't influenced my hands to write the words, and if my family and friends hadn't given me encouragement and support both verbally and monetarily. As for you, if you've fallen short of gratefulness because you cannot see the rainbow in your storm, just think of a time that you were able to relish in positivity and joy, then give God some praise for what was and what still is possible when you believe.

PRAYER REQUESTS: I have a special prayer request for people on the spectrum, people suffering from alcohol and substance abuse, and for people with mental health issues stemming from pain or root problems that have gone unaddressed.

BE ENCOURAGED: NEVER lose sight of God amidst adversity… Ponder this: "Loneliness comes when we forget the One who is ALWAYS with us." (Our Daily Bread Quote #4). Here I am.

FEATURED SONGS OF PRAISE: "Give Me You" by Shana Wilson (you can listen to it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40FJnljLOr0) and "Your Spirit" by Tasha Cobbs-Leonard feat. Kierra Sheard (you can listen to it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDXe1wvlUQ0). I would also like to recommend Classical for Studying Radio on Pandora to better facilitate your meditation on the Word as you study, you can listen to that station here https://rb.gy/wtbmva.

KEY PASSAGE(S) – MATTHEW 6:11"Give us this day our daily bread."

**Unless otherwise indicated all Scripture quotations are taken from the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible retrieved from https://www.biblegateway.com/passage**

REFLECTIONS: The concept of getting your daily bread revolves around getting a daily portion of only what is necessary to live. In other words, avoiding overeating and gluttony, and in some cases, preventing malnourishment. But tonight we're going to discuss its spiritual meaning.

One of Jesus' disciples recognized something about the Lord that stood out from the rest of them, it was His tenacity and technique for prayer. It was clear to him that Jesus was doing something differently than them, so he asked the Lord to teach them how to pray. Cue "the Lord's prayer"; interestingly enough, it's not technically the Lord's prayer, it's just what we've dubbed it. In actuality, this was Jesus' way of teaching the disciples how to pray. After all, wasn't that the actual request, to be taught

Oh, some of yall must be scratching your heads. Well, read "the Lord's prayer" in Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV) here, https://rb.gy/qoe9jw. Now peep, this prayer starts off with the acknowledgment of our Father's holiness, and Jesus proceeds with praise. However, if you consider the words, they're generic. Matthew 6:12 simply says "forgive our debts..." Yet, the Word tells us to be specific when confessing our sin; "when anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess in what way they have sinned" (Leviticus 5:5NIV).

I'd be remiss if I didn't take a short detour to break down the how in this prayer. So, here it goes: Jesus teaches us to begin prayer with praise and acknowledgment of God's mercy and grace. Then, we move into accepting His authority in and over our lives, essentially turning over our worries to Him, allowing and trusting Him to work things out for our betterment. When we get to the daily bread, which I'll touch more on in a pair of seconds (s/o to Tabitha Brown), He's showing us the importance of giving the Holy Spirit permission to prepare us for the events of the day, which in turn, opens our eyes to any specific sins that still need confessing. But, He shows us that it's also necessary to forgive those who have wronged us just as God forgave us - to forgive and forget means to let go. We never really forget someone's hurtful act, we just learn to address the issue, learn from it, and move forward. Jesus then shows us the need to request guidance and protection from temptation and evil forces; we cannot conquer those things in our own strength, period. Last, we end the same way we entered, with thanksgiving.

Alright, let's get back on route. We all have a heap of things piled on our plates, but sometimes we choose these fad diets that influence us to leave the bread off of the plate. Here's the thing, Jesus used the term "daily bread" to signify that the sustenance we receive from the Lord is an everyday necessity. His bread (help, coaching, direction) is what reveals to us who we can become, and what we can do with what He's already equipped us with. But when we're looking for worldly sustenance, we're left with trying to do difficult calculations to quantify how much of something we have, how much more we think we need, or what's considered enough for us to be fulfilled. The fact of the matter is, there's a section of our plate that's empty, it's missing our daily bread.

The process of eating isn't what keeps us alive, rather, it's the process within us as the food is broken down and its nutrients are appropriately distributed throughout our bodies. Just the same, as we delve into the spiritual food - God's Word - there is a process being led by the Holy Spirit who is within us, strengthening us, transforming us, and shaping us to live, love, and serve as Jesus did.

This isn't Tye's doctrine, this is Bible. Let's do some fact-checking. Here's what the Word says:
  • "But He answered and said, 'It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God'" (Matthew 4:4).
  • "8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: 9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain" (Proverbs 30:8-9).
  • "And Jesus said unto them, 'I AM the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst'" (John 6:35).
  • "Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you" (John 14:17).
  • "Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us" (Ephesians 3:20).
  • "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:8).
  • "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4).
If you're still tryna figure out what your daily bread is, it's the Holy Spirit, it's time with God through prayer and meditation on His Word; we snack and eat throughout the day to feed ourselves and to calm the rumbles of our stomach, all the while ignoring the groaning of our spirit. If we'd spend half as much time developing a relationship with God - giving time and attention to feed our spiritual hunger - what a transformation our lives would see. For one, we'd be compelled to make an attitude adjustment, because we'd be in-tune with the Spirit and therefore able to recognize: it's not the preacher's fault we didn't get anything from the sermon, God provides everything we need we just dismiss what isn't to our liking and skip out on the Word because it's too boring or may be difficult to understand. The reason the word in the Bible is sometimes difficult to chew is that we didn't ask for our daily portion of the Spirit to cut its meat so that it's spiritually discerned.

We are already equipped with power - it is within us, activated by the Holy Spirit (read Acts 1:8NIV, here https://rb.gy/amvfq9). However, many of us have a form of godliness - we have an affinity to do right over wrong and/or help those in need, yet, we still reject the influence of the Spirit - our inner voice fighting to show us the path to take (read Acts 7:51 and 2 Timothy 3:5NIV, here https://rb.gy/bxpy7r). The Word of God made clear by the Holy Spirit, and God's direction made clear also by the Spirit's influence, is our manna - our daily bread; the Lord provides in many ways, but it's not always going to be packaged the way we want it. Therefore, adjust your attitude, pick up the Word for your daily portion so that you can put on the lens of God, and begin looking at your circumstances differently. When you digest your daily bread, you're equipping yourself with the tools to find little nuggets in everything; you'll be able to take away at least one key thing from the dullest sermon, you'll see the inner beauty of an unattractive individual, you'll recognize the potential in the ugliest person (figuratively speaking), and you'll be joyful in your pain. After all, you'll be content that misfortune is only temporary and preparing you for your something better, and you'll welcome the rain because you'll finally be aware that the Sun [Son] still shines, it's [He] just temporarily hidden by the clouds. Now pick up your plate and eat this daily bread. #SOW

POWER IN PRAYER: POWER IN PRAYER: Our Father, our King, our Provider, our Daily Bread, we thank you for your mercy, grace, love without conditions, and your direction. We are grateful for the lessons in our circumstances, and the teachable moments for our children. We thank you that your provisions come both physically and spiritually, packed full of sustenance. Lord, help our unbelief so that when we seek you, we find you and when we pray, may we leave that prayer in your hands without worry or concern for the next day, trusting in confidence that you've already cleared the path that leads to our best outcome. We thank you for cutting your bread for us so that it is easily digested by way of your Holy Spirit. Father, we thank you for delivering those who are suffering from the pain of their past, those plagued by addiction and substance abuse, individuals burdened by mental illness and autism; provide a voice for those who have lost theirs, make a way for those who cannot find one, and deliver peace where hope in their hearts is empty. Thank you for choosing us to be your living, walking examples of Christ-like character. May we chew on your daily bread so that our plate will never miss a serving of you, and every negative thought and lie whispered by the devil is dissolved. May your will be done in our lives, and may our trust in you be strong enough that we are genuine in that request.

Let's discuss food allergies for a moment. When my son was about 1 and a half years old, I was on a pescatarian diet. I was strictly breastfeeding, yet, slowly incorporating solids. My son had never reacted to my breast milk, so, I thought it was safe to give him some of the fried fish that my parents had accommodated me with when I had visited. The next day, my son was profusely throwing up, mostly my breast milk, back-to-back over 2 days.

It started like every 30 minutes, then the time in-between each vomit session got longer. He'd wake up in the middle of the night, without warning, throwing up. He was signing for milk, initially, so I did feed him. But then I stopped once I realized he wasn't tolerating it. Fast forward, he did that two other times after ingesting different kinds of fish and fish that was prepared differently. Since two of the occasion involved shellfish also, I decided to avoid seafood altogether until he was old enough, by his pediatrician's standards, to run an allergy test. The blood test said he had zero allergies to food or anything else for that matter. For me, I just assumed maybe it was because he was born premature and had experienced vomiting as a baby as well when I introduced oats and grains. Doctors told me that his system would take a little longer to develop enough to handle the solids, so I held back for several more months. When I reintroduced them, he was fine. But, today, I found out that this wasn't the case for my baby boy when it came to fish.

He consumed some fish last night, and again, a full night of vomiting throughout. I did some research and found that children can technically have zero allergies, yet, still have a sensitivity to foods. A close friend of mine, whose parents are physician assistants, also informed me that this could be an intolerance due to GI issues. That being said, if you or your child(ren) is experiencing an intolerance such as vomiting after the consumption of a specific food such as fried fish, it's probably best to avoid all fish, and I'd even go so far as to say just eliminate seafood. If you/he/she is reacting to peanuts specifically, steer clear of all types of nuts just to be safe. Again, this is opinion-based, but it truly is better to be safe than sorry.

As always, be mindful of the things you allow to feed your body, both physically and figuratively. Be safe, be blessed, and choose health and fitness!

Please take a moment to register your Ralph's, Food 4 Less, and/or Kroger Rewards cards to enroll your member number/phone number for the Ralph's/Food 4 Less Community Contribution Program to help Fostering Mind, Body, and Soul Incorporated (aka FMBS Inc., serving communities throughout Southern Cali since 2012) raise funds to give back to the community; for every purchase you make, a small % is given as a donation to our non-profit organization - your rewards points are NOT affected by this enrollment. To enroll, you must go to their website here http://www.friendsindeedpas.org/get-involved/ralphs-community-contribution-program/ and link your rewards cards and/or telephone numbers (Alt ID) to our organization each year, and we will earn money for every purchase made under your rewards cards. Your continued support is always appreciated.
  5. Update on my 1st children's book, Color Isn't Who I AM © 2019: My personal printed copy is scheduled to arrive any day now. Once I review and give the thumbs up for mass printing, it'll be on a bookshelf near you.
  6. Be on the lookout for the relaunch of my non-profit organization, Fostering Mind, Body, and Soul Incorporated (FMBS Inc.). Although I am willing to carry out my plans solo, I would be remiss if I didn't extend an invitation to ALL willing volunteers to help me serve our communities by accepting a significant role as a committed and trusted board member, or a contributor of time (physical volunteer work), monies, supplies, and/or resources. My appreciation is extended to anyone that can help facilitate making an impact in surrounding at-risk and underprivileged communities throughout Southern California. Part of our mission is to help supply the homeless as well as needy families with food and hygiene bags throughout the year and especially during the holidays and to serve as mentors and/or advocates for at-risk youth and victims of abuse. Reach out to me regarding your interest in service or to arrange another form of contribution; contact me via email at fmbsinc_2012@outlook.com, or leave a voicemail and/or text at (951) 790-2127.
JOIN OUR CAUSE: Fostering Mind, Body, and Soul Incorporated (FMBS Inc.) is on a never-ending quest to locate deserving individuals to extend our services to. Therefore, we are always in need of monetary donations and/or contributions of hygiene items, sealed snacks, bottled water, seasonal items (gloves, scarves, blankets, umbrellas, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, etc.), mini bibles, reading books, and so forth; our YEAR-ROUND mission is to serve homeless and/or needy individuals and families in underprivileged communities throughout Southern California. We also need DEDICATED volunteers and members – is this your calling? Eventually, when we have met our need for volunteers and board members, we will extend our services to assist and address some of the needs of our veterans and their family members. We are successful because of YOUR continued support. Please continue to back us up through participation, and/or by encouraging others to join our cause!
