GREATEST Commandment (2/29/12)

Greetings Everyone,
All honor and praise be to God! As we bring Black History Month to a close, I would like to focus on Emmett W. Chappelle (1925-2005), an African American scientist who made valuable contributions in several fields: medicine, philanthropy, food science, and astrochemistry. Chappelle discovered that even one-celled plants such as algae, can convert carbon dioxide to oxygen, which helped to create a safe food supply for astronauts. Some of Chappelle's most interesting work was in the area of luminescence, which is light without heat. While designing instruments for the Mars Viking spacecraft, he became interested in bioluminescence, which is warm light produced by living organisms. Chappelle used two chemicals from fireflies which give off light when mixed with ATP (adenosine triphosphate), an energy storage compound found in all living cells, this could provide a method of detecting life on Mars. Mae Carol Jemison (1956 - age 55) is an American physician and NASA astronaut. She became the first Black woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992. Jemison served in the Peace Corps from 1985 to 1987. She resigned from NASA in 1993 to form a company researching the application of technology to daily life. She is a dancer, and holds 9 honorary doctorates in science, engineering, letters, and the humanities. Jemison is an active public speaker who appears before private and public groups promoting science and technology as well as providing an inspirational and educational message for young people. Daniel Hale Williams (1858-1931) was an American surgeon. He was the first African-American cardiologist, and performed one of the first successful open-heart surgeries in the United States. He also founded Provident Hospital, the first non-segregated hospital in the United States. In 1893, during the administration of President Grover Cleveland, Williams was appointed surgeon-in-chief of Freedman's Hospital in Washington, D.C.. In addition to organizing the hospital, Williams also established a training school for African-American nurses at the facility. He worked to create more hospitals and accessibility for African Americans. In 1895 he co-founded the National Medical Association for African American doctors, and in 1913 he became a charter member and the only African American doctor in the American College of Surgeons. And we'll close with Jewel Plummer Cobb (1924 - age 88). She is an African American Educator and Research Scientist. Cobb was awarded a Ph.D. in cell physiology from New York University in 1950, she has served as a researcher, a college professor and administrator, as well as a staunch supporter for greater minority participation in scientific careers. Much of Cobb's research has been focused on the skin pigment melanin, and her most significant research has been with testing new chemotherapeutic drugs in cancer cells, the impact of which continues. She has written often about racial and sexual discrimination in the sciences, and has raised funds to allow more minorities to enter into the field. I know that our history lessons were limited as a result of my illness and technical difficulties, but I hope that yall enjoyed the information I was able to provide. Continue to keep one another in prayer, thanking God for the victory, and refraining from claiming defeat from the enemy; ALWAYS pray for your desired result, NOT the unfavorable outcome. Do NOT lose sight of God in the midst of adversityGod Bless!

Passage Romans 6:6-7 (NLT):
"We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin."

Matthew 22:37-39 says, "Jesus replied, 'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' 'This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments." The whole moral of the Bible is Love, this passage even specifies that, "to Love the Lord and to Love your neighbors, is the FIRST and GREATEST commandment." Love conquers all and naturally drives the forces of good over evil. So if we concentrate of loving as God loves, unconditionally, then our paths will naturally start taking a turn for the better.

Prayer of the Day:
Lord God we thank you for your protection, love, grace, and forgiveness. We thank you for the peace that passeth all understanding, for bringing all those things that were once in the dark into the light, and for bringing clarity to some decisions that we need to make. We thank you for keeping us filled with the Spirit, that our tongue may be tamed, only formulating words that are good to edifying that they may minister grace to the hearer. We thank you for the ability, desire, and strength to love without conditions. Father God we thank you for our healing, restoration, deliverance, and mended hearts. We thank you for the strength to keep moving forward with a new attitude and gratitude. We thank you for all the trials and triumphs that help mold us into better examples of what it means to be a child of Christ. We thank you for your breath of life, and for providing yourself as a refuge when we have no where else to turn. We thank you for a renewed mind, and for deliverance of our debts by providing our every need as well as the desires of our heart, as they fall in line with your word and will. Thy will be done in our individual lives Father, and we thank you for the victory of it all. This is our affirmation of faith, that we present to you in name of Jesus, Amen!
